VOTE BY MAIL
IN THE NEW JERSEY PRIMARY,
JULY 7, 2020
By now, all registered voters (Democrats and Republicans) should have received their Vote by Mail ballot. The following are some important facts to know about voting by mail. This is the one for residents of Essex County (Morris County ballots come in a yellow envelope):
WHY VOTE BY MAIL (VBM)?
- More time: 30+ days to research candidates and make decisions
- Convenient and free: all ballots come with prepaid postage
- Safety (COVID-19 concerns)
WHY A BALLOT MIGHT NOT BE COUNTED:
About 1 in 10 people who voted in last month’s special elections had their votes rejected. There are more than a dozen reasons ballots were rejected. Here are the most common reasons:
- The signature on the ballot did not match the one on file (Your name on the ballot envelope is the name you registered with. Use that name.): 26.14%
- The ballot arrived too late. 19.04%
- The required certificate/ballot was not enclosed. 19.70%
HERE ARE SOME TIPS ABOUT HOW TO FILL OUT YOUR VBM BALLOT:

Essex County Clerk Chris Durkin made a step-by-step video on how to fill out and return your mail ballot here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJpUgsbE0jw&t=1s.
Here is the official Q & A document from the county:
ALL IN-PERSON VOTERS, with the exception of voters who need an ADA voting machine, will vote ON PAPER with a Provisional Ballot. If you show up on July 7, there will not be voting machines for you to use! All voters will receive a postcard with open polling locations or for your onsite voting locations please go to your town’s website.
There will also be regional DROP BOXES for those who do not feel comfortable leaving their completed ballot in their mailbox. Drop boxes will be located at the South Mountain Arena Complex on Northfield Ave. in West Orange, and in front of the West Caldwell Courthouse/Municipal Building, 21 Clinton Road, West Caldwell. They will be available at the end of next week. Ballots are picked up daily and will be kept in a secure, locked facility until they are counted. The ballots will be quarantined off-site for 7 days before being delivered to the clerk. If there is a problem with a ballot and it is received on the later side, there will not be time to correct the error or send a second one in!
WHAT IF YOUR SIGNATURE DOESN’T MATCH PREVIOUS SIGNATURES? Due to illness or age, some people’s signatures may have changed since they last voted. If you are concerned that the signature on file is old and may not match your current signature, you can update it on a Voter Registration Application (check off the Update Signature box).
