Houston called and Temple B’nai Abraham responded. To date, we have donated well over $10,000 to the Clergy Discretionary Fund for our own relief efforts, sent countless care packages directly to Congregation Beth Israel, and heavily supported the Federation’s broad Jewish community campaign to aid victims of Harvey and, now, Irma.
Yesterday I caught up with Rabbi Lyon. The cleaning and the reconstruction, of both buildings and lives, have begun, even as many are still out of their homes. It will take time, but he reports a Jewish community and a community at large that are facing the challenges ahead straight on.
He told me that now, more than anything, what they need are gift cards – Visa gift cards, and cards for stores like Target, Walmart, Home Depot and Lowe’s. Storage areas are at a premium as, everywhere, classes and activities of all kind seek temporary space. Classes are even being held on the congregation’s day school’s tennis courts! Beth Israel staff and volunteers will ensure cards get into the hands of individuals in need, both in the Jewish community and beyond.
If you like, you can still contribute to our own efforts by letting me know, by return email, if you would like to add something to your Temple account. Or by all means bring in a check or call in a credit card donation.
Or if you prefer, order a card or cards, in denominations of $25 or $50. Send the cards directly to:

A week from now we welcome the New Year. We will give thanks for our own blessings, and pray for those in need. For all, may the year ahead be one of prosperity, tranquility and peace.
